Tearing my hair out re Servicing and MOT

I hate this time of year, as it's Servicing and MOT time, and I can never get a straight answer, or really good service, from any garage.

I've tried supposedly award-winning independent Renault specialists, and main dealers, and have never been bowled over by their service.

All the 4 garages in my localish area are either 2 trains, 2 buses or a lift-with-a-friend away. Do you guys manage to find ones nearer, even walking distance?

And in terms of the actual servicing pricing etc formy 3.0 dV6:

• one garage told me I just need a basic service (like an interim one) as they did my 60,000 service last year (early, when the car had done 54,000 miles)

• one garage told me I need the full, to-specification Renault service (no age or mileage quoted to me)

• the other told me I need the 8 years'/96,000 miles service as my car is 7.5 years' old

I've only done 5,000 miles since my last service (the 60,000 one) and the service booklet in my Vel Satis says a service is required every 12,000 miles or 2 years, so technically I can wait another year?!

Well confused!

If you have the time and passion (and money), the thing to ask yourself is "when was the last time I know that x was done?" Example: when was the last time the coolant was replaced? Coming up to a warm summer, if it is of indeterminate age it could be sludgy and ineffective. If you are paying a garage, you are best off finding one that will do what you want specifically, rather than offering you a portfolio service that does what they want.
