Oil leak now…

Not sure if the car is crying because it had to go back to the dealer. Drove into work early this morning and parked in the underground car park. Came back 2 hours later to find fresh oil underneath the front of the car, mainly in a line across the front of the undertray, with some spots around the driver side wheel assembly.

Got over to the dealer and popped the bonnet to have a look. Fresh oil on the release catch under the bonnet. Top end looked clean, no obvious splashes. toolk the engine trim panels off and again, the top looked clean. there was a sheen of oil visible inside the undertray though.

I've been driving the thing like Miss Daisy for the past few days, waiting to get it looked at. sticking to 42 in the avg speed zones and 60 on the urban motorway. Not over-revving it or asking too much. No idea now. Lasat car I had with drips of oil underneath it was an old Volvo 340 which seized in spectacular fashion on the A1 near Huntingdon. Well, i say seized, it ran the 8 miles home with the oil warning light on and then never started again due to poor compression!

Got the car back tonight: 7 faults on the OBDC which all cleared down. Tyre pressure sensor fixed… which handily told me they had inflated that tyre to 37psi!

The oil leak was apparently traced to a connecting pipe between the intercooler and turbo which had come astray :/

The dealer had a family issue to attend to, so I didn't want to press him for a full explanation. Suffice that "We think we've fixed it, run it for a few days and get back to us". The only thing they didn't work on was the rear screen demister, as they couldn't find the connector for it…

Driving home, couple of miles of 30 zone, 5 miles of 70, tailback over the Kingston Bridge (no really!), 60 on the M80, 42 through the 40 limit on the A80 and the last mile home: car returned 45.5mpg which is a hell of an improvement.

I did notice smoke from the exhaust though. For now i am prepared to believe that if it has been struggling with poor air mix for 3 weeks, there is a lot of soot built up in there from poor combustion which will hopefully blow out.

Fingers crossed, eh! Cool

Evening!

Glad you've got your Vel back tonight and the tyre pressure sensor is fixed. Didn't two need fixing as of earlier today though?

I'm pleased to hear that your oil leak from this morning doesn't sound like it's as serious as it could have been, from what the dealer said. Is it a Renault or an indie dealer by the way? Sorry if you've already said!

Your MPG does sound like it's improved on your ride home this evening, nice one. I hope you continue to get improved MPG out of your Vel from now on – keep us posted!

Re the smoke, maybe it just needs a few foot-down clear-outs over the next week or so. My Satis used to emit a little bit of smoke when I really floored it, but now it never does at all, maybe because I'm making sure I take him for a motorway spin at least once a week.

Wow, well done spotting the oil leak, that could have led to complete turbo failure if it was starved of oil!

It is an indie used car dealer, not a Renault. I'll not name and shame him yet. If it turns out all to the good I shall big him up on here as a model of proper customer service in the used car market.

To paraphrase Monty Python, the other sensor "got better"… no idea how, I'm not fussed though. The tyre pressures only show up when the multi-function computer is on the overall odometer screen, but they all show up, which is cool.

I'm pleased if I can keep the overall mix mpg above 40mpg. Our old Volvo 850 Tdi managed 44, which I thought was remarkable for a 15 yr old heavy 2.5 direct injection.

I'll try and run the car reasonably gently for a few days and then run some Redex in and give it a bit of a boot, see what happens both with the smoke and power /mpg.

Oil is still leaking from the front. It forms a line parallel with the front of the car, about a foot back from the bumper, maybe 12 inches long. Fuel system fault reappeared this morning nd also reappeared once after a shutdown and restart.

Noticed that at 2250 rpm in 3rd (about 35mph) the car feels like it is pulsing… a cyclic hesitation and then surge… not much, but as I am listening out for anything abnormal it registered as a new symptom.

I will call the dealer back this morning. I get the impression this is going to be messy and / or expensive :(

Oh dear, I really do hope it doesn't turn into anything majorly serious or expensive for you mate!

Is the cyclical hesitation like a panting, scuffing kind of noise, which improves if you accelerate into it or decelerate out of it?

Keep us posted!

Dare I say you might have one of the cars that gives the Vel Satis a bad name?  I know a guy who had issue after issue with his 3.0 dV6, he got shot of it after six months and lost around £6,000 (he bought it when it was three years old).

Keep us updated.

Hi, there is no obvious sound (that I could hear above normal v.quiet engine and a bit of radio). It felt almost like the engine was on the cusp of really opening up and then hanging back, but repeatedly… A bit like in old movies when you see the car bodies move when they rev the engines at the start of a street race. I'm calling the chap to find out his thoughts. I'll keep you posted.

Dealer is going to speak to his engineering fellow and contact me on Monday… Hope nothing untoward happens between now and then!
