I`m going to pick up a 3.5 soon and was wondering about weight reduction and power gains.  I`m after a sleeper in more than one way.  how easy is it to remove the rear seats thinking of sleeping in it overnight as it  is based the Grand Espace there must be room.  I originally been after a 350z but due to illness I need a  auto and something easy to get in and out of.  I don`t want much just the performance of a 350z in a camper,

It got me thinking of stripping it out as a track day car, wa wondering how much all that beautiful interior weighs.

thanks guys

anyway I`m sure ill keep it standard just a thought.

Hi Jazz,Welcome. I have the 3.5 version with all the bells and whistles(Initiale model). With the rear seats down I've carried many a long items from Ikea with most protruding int the front passenger are. I wouldn't try sleeping in the back even with the seats down or out. Lack of length.  I would go for an Espace far roomier in the back. You might find one with the  3.5 engine.

I don't know about track days though. The car is fast and I've had mine up to 140 mph on straights. Motoring on twisting roads is a problem with the E.S.P. kicking in if you try to be too adventurous. I wouldn't try it with the ESP off.   It is a heavy car and would need a lot of suspension mods and weight reduction.  Top Gear Guys did a show with one modified, it rolled like a barge and they were not impressed. I would keep a look out for an Espace.

All the best,

Brian

Thanks I'm sure I'll keep it standard.  It was just a Friday night pub conversation but it did get me thinking.  The 350z roadster weighs 1,620 kg.  the VS is 1720 kg. surely a remap of the nissan map would get it close to the 274 of the 350z plus a stainless steel exhaust when the original needs replacing.  It cant be that far off 260bhp  or something like that.

Well cant wait to go get her.

Very excited

Probably wise. I've thought about chipping mine but not sure you would get the full benefit due to the autobox. It can be a bit slow fully engaging even when us ing the sequential mode. In saying that, it is still damn fast and I've shocked a few Beemers & Mercs when trying to take me on. Oh.to be young again.

I always loved a sleeper

I had a volvo t5 pushing about 260BHP its mid range power was amazing.

I think a remap would improve mpg they normally do on a turbo car  and from looking at the mpg on the 350z there not bad at all.  There also seems to be little difference in the 0 to 60 times  in an auto to a manual  not that they're really important.

I think Brian has hit on the main issue regarding 'chipping' a 3.5 – the gearbox. I read somewhere on the net that the Aisin Warner box fitted to all the UK cars was at the upper end of its performance capabilities as regards power and torque, so if one were to re-tune for more of both you might be asking for problems! I believe the facelift cars that Europe got after 2005 has an uprated 6 speed auto.

There might also be issues with the plenum chamber and exhaust (specifically the cats) being too restrictive to make a 'chip' worthwhile? As the exhaust is already stainless you will have to wait a while before it falls to pieces – mine is 15 years old and lasting well.

Oh for the days when you could bolt on the next size up Weber carb, tweak the ignition for a bit more advance and go for a blast…..
