I now have the car back with a years MoT.

The garage has done things  in a slightly different order but it now runs and brakes beautifully.

I still need the cambelt and a major service doing and then the cosmetics and a good cleaning but so far I am happy.

It did break down on the way home but i think that was partly caused by the old car battery which I shall change tomorrow.

Cost so far £1600.

Marks out of ten for Fields of Hanley Swn….10. Superb and very nice people who took the time to explain everything to me.

Congratulations Brad, I'm very pleased to hear your Vel Satis has passed its MoT and Fields of Hanley have done a good job on some of the other agreed tasks. I wish I could find a garage like them up here!

I hope things go equally smoothly for you with the cambelt, major service, cleaning and battery – and we look forward to seeing you on the 11th!

After giving top marks to Fields of Hanley Swan, I have spoken to them about the cambelt change on this 3.0 Diesel and they are insistent that it is chain driven and doesn't need a cambelt. I am certain that this is wrong advice. I know the 3.5 petrol is chain driven but the diesel 3.0 Isuzu unit has a cambelt. Are they right?

As usual, this information is not in the Renault V S Owners Handbook.

This is where things get 'interesting', as I too have been told my some Renault experts that the 3.0 Isuzu diesel unit is chain-driven. I'll Tweet it to Renault and see what they come back with!

I'm looking around and finding Isuzu did make a 3.0l tdi with timing chain. That was an I4 though, not a V6. Curiouser and curiouser said Alice!

Oh, found this on T'Bay: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/RENAULT-…..414a756be2 seems someone is selling a belt kit for the 3.0? Surprised

It's belt driven – My Renault dealer told me.  It doesn't need changed until 125,000 miles.

Ta. I was 95% sure the 3.0 is belt-driven. The mileage you quoted sounds about right, as the Vel Satis official service book states 120,000 miles/10 years, and I've got a letter from Renault UK from a few years ago stating the same. I'm going to go for 10 years as that will be here first, to be on the safe side.

This link shows the cambelt kit for the Vel Satis/Saab 3.0 dci. I believe this engine uses a combined chain/belt drive – chain from the crank to the back of the lower pulley shown in the photo, which drives a belt to the cams. Presumably this method of drive is rather more sturdy than the all belt system fitted to something like an Alfa 24v V6, which needs changing much more regularly (and breaks regularly too!).
