Vel Satis V6 Diesel booked in…

I have my newly purchased 3.0 Diesel booked in for a thorough going over, full service, cambelt change and MoT. I have budgeted £2500 to get is as tip top as possible.

I also decided ( a long time ago ) NEVER EVER EVER EVER to use a UK Renault or Citroen dealer again. I could fill a whole book with 33 years of tales of dissatisfaction, bad manners, poor workmanship and lack of support from the UK importers. I took my last  Grand Espace, Citroen C4 G Picasso and Citroen C6 to French dealers for servicing – they are slower but they do know what they are doing.

One irony was trying to buy a pair of wiper blades from the Citroen dealer in Pontivy, Brittany last August. He asked for my VIN and found the part on his computer. These  UK spec blades are different to French blades and he couldn't even order a set for me – I had to buy from the UK when I got back. £77 for a pair!!

Anyway, the garage I shall be using for the Vel Satis is one I have used before – they are Renault specialists – Field and Co, Hanley Swan, near Malvern. I shall keep a log and update this thread with progress reports.

Well, I have given the VS over to the garage, Field and Co. They are really nice people.

The car, which I have owned a few days and driven about 20 metres is rattling and shaking. the brakes are below par, the exhaust is wobbly, the ESP isn't working and the thing is overheating.

The MoT is tomorrow (providing it is fit enough to be able to be tested) and the whole car is showing all the typical Renault traits of a car that has just about reached the end of the road after just 110,000 miles and 7 years.

But I won't let it die.

I shall report back tomorrow.

Top marks to the Field and Co, Renault Specialists in Hanley Swan (near Malvern).

They have looked at the VS and report it needs the following. This is a "so far" list. It will get longer…

STAGE 1

All discs and pads

Steering arms, possibly a steering rack

Various ball joints

ABS not working

ESP not working

Estimate is over £1000 for this list and the garage have ordered the parts today

STAGE 2, once it is legal again and roadworthy

A major service including cambelt

Overheating problem to fix.

Rattling exhaust shields

Tyre pressure sensors

Then STAGE 3, the cosmetics:

Niggly dents and paintwork issues, the bubbling window frames and the damaged nearside mirror/bodywork trims here and there which are scraped or dented or just missing

Crabby wheels which need repainting as they will never clean up.

Steam clean everywhere – seats and carpets especially.

I reckon it'll be good for the meeting in Staffordshire. I hope!

Thanks for your update, Brad, and our proverbial hats go off to you for dedicating yourself to reviving the 3.0 Vel you bought from Anthony. Good on you and I hope the work goes smoothly! Sure, it's a long list but it's all doable, and otger Vel Satises have gone through similar overhauls successfully.

We really hope you can make it to join some of us in Staffs on June 11th. If your Vel is driveable but not in amazing visual condition, please still come as our meet is about bringing VS-passion-sharing people together, not a pristine magazine photoshoot.

All the best with these initial stages of repair!

Thanks. If it's not quite ready for the meeting in June, I shall come in one of my Avantimes. Bought another this week – shame they are all blue. I really wanted a lighter colour.

Update from garage on the VS:

Three of the calipers are seized and so I have authorised them all to be replaced. Another £500.

Brad would you be interested in selling any Avantimes?  I'll be after one in July/August.

No. I am actually looking to buy some more. One in each colour would be great.

I actually do have a Rover 800 in every colour made (except Cayman Blue) and at one point 77 of the 111 cars in my collection were Rover 800s. I have sold most of the 800s over the past three years and now have just 30, all mint and a couple which are unregistered and which have less than 60 miles on the clock.

I think the VS and Avantime will become my next big thing.

I don't think I had 77 cars when they were all made by Matchbox Lesney! Surprised
