Like the thinking Brad. I love Bangernomics. The story of my Vel is elsewhere on the forum….but it was a bargain and gave five years trouble free motoring (most long haul) up until a few weeks ago :( but even so it only cost me £300 a year to run given what I paid for her. The sale hurt but time was against me sadly.
Until this week we had a 97 Nissan Micra, 95 W124 estate and my Seven. Caterham aside, they cost me £500 each to buy (plus tax, insurance, servicing – I do myself – and MOT). The Merc we have had for seven years. Just agreed to sell it on for £1200. Micra went last night for £650.
Anticipating a bit of snow etc at Christmas I was going to buy some decent winter tyres for my Vel. I was quoted about £560 for four (fitted, balanced etc.). Hmmmm….
I found a '98 Ford Maverick locally with petrol 2.4 Nissan engine, 98k miles, history with 11 months mot and 6 months tax (had two new tyres, rear exhaust, recent service….). Price? £475.
Just sold it for £1400…..go figure.
The point is. Buy with full history, full MOT if possible and check for corrosion. Try to stick to Japanese or 'old school' mercs (w124 series) and you will have few problems from my experience – and sell on at a profit as they do appreciate if you buy carefully.
