Took my VS in to Renault dealer for a service yesterday morning. For most things I go to my own local guy who is cheaper and excellent, but I wanted to keep a Dealer Service history going in the Service book.  I also wanted them to have another go at the "Faulty Ignition" thing. I had a small list of things for them to investigate (air con not no longer working, sidelight not working, split in air intake hose, the Faulty Ignition) and they phoned me later in the day to say there were lots of other things needing doing.  It will cost a squillion million pounds, I think.  Meantime, I have a courtesy car from them, a red Nissan Micra, which they have kindly let me keep until mine is ready (early next week).  I find, somehow, that a Micra is not the same as a Vel Satis……

You must be very brave and rich to leave car with dealer and such a long list of problems. I'm pretty sure that bill may be more than a car value…

I'm not brave and rich, I'm cowardly and poor! They will phone me before proceeding with anything too major. If for example, the Air Con compressor needs replacing, rather than there just being a leak, then I will have to think seriously.

Plus, I just got two new tyres this week!  £87 each, for an economy brand that's quite good, two rear ones lasting well.

Hi David,

£87 each for budget Vel Satis tyres is pretty good, I agree. I paid £210 for the front Michelins, so may try budget tyres next myself!

Good on you for trying a dealer as they can often fix things a bit more confidently and efficiently, albeit more expensively. The key is to say no when you can, your air con being a prime example. Many Vel Satises suffer from poor air con even if they don't have a leak, so you can always say no if the dealer's quote is too much.

Keep us posted in this, your very own diary thread for this particular service!

PS – I separated your and Rosic's posts into a new topic, as this section of the forum is one-topic-per-owner-per-event, so to speak. I hope the moving of the posts in the database has gone smoothly. Will become apparent later today when you reply! Smile

Looks like the separation worked! Sorry I didn't realise about the separate-thread-per-story.

I drove to the dealers this morning just to speak to someone in person. They won't proceed with any major air con thing without asking me first. They have still to investigate it properly. They are doing front ball joints, which they say are safety-critical, and some other things too.

No worries at all Smile Just nice to keep a separate micro-blog for each time one of our cars 'goes in'.

How much did they charge for the ball joints, out of interest?

The Service department of the main dealer called today. it looks like the bill will come to £1250 plus the cost of the original service i took it in for!  This includes really quite a lot of parts, which I  will itemise here with costs once I get the bill.

This is obviously quite a high proportion of the value of the car.  There are Vel Satises for sale very cheap now, as the relevent thread in this Forum shows.  However, if I bought another VS for say £1500 to £2500, it would doubtless come with its own curious collected concatenation of concommitant pending catastrophes.  I could find that two months after I bought it, the "new" car needs all the things i am getting done to mine.  So I judge it best to stick with what I have, this time around, in the hopes that nothing else major will happen for a while.

In relation to the "faulty fuel injection" messsage, they are renewing a sensor (I forget which she said, but it's not the MAP sensor), as that is what thier diagnostic is showing. They have warned however, that some other component behind the sensor (again I forget which, but will find out and post here in due course) may be to blame. But they have to start with the sensor.

So that's the state of play today! I'm still barging around in the little red Micra and it's NOT THE SAME!

Thanks for the update David. Sorry to hear your current batch of repairs comes to a fair old amount. I was in the same situation in 2009 when it failed the MoT on multiple things. I took a deep breath, paid for it all and it's been fine since, give or take a few minor grumbles which cost less than £100 to fix each time.

If you're in the Vel Satis ownership club for the long-haul, like many of us, then it's worth you investing in paying for a batch of repairs like this, plus a good service, as hopefully it should give yours the zest for life it deserves.

Can't really recommend much to make the Micra liveable, I'm afraid…!
