I have booked mine in for a service at Freestyle Renault, Brighton. I was disappointed with Renault Woking last year so I phoned around and Brighton have six Vels on their books plus two 'old school' mechanics who had training on the Vel. It seems that there are a lot of older Renaults (and other marques) down on the coast and it makes sense why; folk who retire often buy their last new car at reirement and keep it. The garages make a good business from maintaining them (the service manager was honest about this to me on the phone). Their mainstay is not so much flogging new cars, but keeping folk in the dealer network with servicing especially on the older cars. Interesting.

I will feedback once the car has been serviced on Friday morning – hopefully worth the hour long drive south (labour charge cheaper down on the coast compared to here too).

Fingers crossed….Wink4

Hope you don't mind me moving your Freestyle post to its own thread, Dave. Just trying to give everyone a new diary blog for each time they take their car anywhere, if that makes sense.

Freestyle sound great, admitting they look after older cars for older customers, and they deal with 6 Vel Satises – always good to know, instead of a garage saying "WTF?!" Wink

Hope it goes smoothly for you. We shall find out on Friday!

Sorry about the delay in replying chaps and chapesses.

Bottom line – all good Laugh

I found the place easily, reception were polite and courteous and the chap who came out with me to check the car etc. prior to taking it in was very polite BUT did not know what a Vel-Satis was (had never seen one Surprised). Transpired he had just moved into Renault six weeks earlier from a different franchise (Ford) so forgiven Wink

Car was left and behind the dealership is a large Asda (two minutes walk) with cafe bar so off I went for a BLT and coffee.

I came back about an hour later and car not finished so waited in the comfortable 'waiting' area with TV, newspapers and was also offered free coffee. There is a viewing area so you can see the folk working on your car easily. I had to wait another half an hour but they took the car out for a run and also washed/cleaned it and vacuumed the interior. So, what was the damage?

This was a fluids and visual check as per the service instructions (and to maintain my warranty). Car sitting on 55,800 miles. Not much other than oil/filter and also they changed the in-line petrol filter (one of the several) that was a bit clogged up. They also do the diagnostic check (plug in the laptop…) and give a thorough check over of the car underneath as well as on top.

£119 all in. I was happy with that. I know that the cost of bits/fluids are nowhere near that (and I can easily do the labour) but to maintain the warranty and have peace of mind before we set off for Toulouse tomorrow this was a good shout for a dealer interim service in my book. The same at SMC Woking last year was £268 (without the fuel filter!) Yell.

I got a quote for the next service including the dreaded sparkplug change (exhaust manifolds off etc) which was a surprising £321….again, SMC Woking had quoted £544 Confused. Is that all labour charge?

Anyway, it was worth the 45 minute drive in my book and I will take the car back for the next service I think. It was a pleasant experience – well done FREESTYLE RENAULT in BRIGHTON.

Thanks for keeping us posted and I'm really pleased Freestyle Renault did good for you, with pleasant and efficient service at a good price. Their quote for the next service including spark plug change sounds great, much better than the dealer.

Who is your warranty with, out of interest?

My warranty is with Warranty Direct – it was on the car when I got it and has been since the Renault Warranty ran out. The cost to me is about £30/month which I figure is not too bad given how comprehensive the warranty seems to be. I would not normally continue with such costs but at that price it seems very reasonable to me given the age of the car.

I think that Freestyle is a Renault Dealer – it sells and services Renault (the dealership used to go by the name of Tates Renault but Freestyle bought them out last year) or so I understand…

My girlfriend uncle is an owner of a Renault dealership. He have a few points of sell across Silesia (the part of Poland where I come from).

On my next visit to PL, I will give them my Vel to proper look at, and service. I wonder what they gonna find, and do, what will be level of service and will they manage to get rid of my airbag light which is still on :D

I always serviced my car in Poland, but that was my friends local garage. I never give it to proper dealer garage. I hope they gonna know what to do. Anyway, they should, because my girlfriend uncle was driving Vel for a good while :D

It is a big coincidence – when we meet first time I had no idea about her Renault connections. Hahaha!

My VS had been getting very "lumpy" and kisfiring-like, on starting in the mornings (a bit like its owner). So I went to my local garage, who are excellent. New heater plugs, six of them, at £51 each plus VAT.  They only charged me £90 for labour, which was decent.  The care certainl starts and runs better. But still the Faulty Fuel Injection problem!

Just had an oil service, winter check and brake clean at my local garage (who I use for MOTs etc). Perfectly fine. Labour is expensive around these parts but I have confidence in them ('Cranleigh Tyre and exhaust' based in cranleigh although they were once Renault specialists apparently) and as my Vel does not fit in the garage simple things I can't do unless the weather is good (and it is a mud bath outside at the moment). I would take it to Renault but availability and convenience this time around swung it.
