My VS developed a squeal on startup from cold in the mornings. It got worse, and the car was very hesitant to reverse up the driveway.  I took it to my local guy.  Needed a Tensioner Kit and a Fan Belt.  Tensioner Kit £120.50, Fan Belt £36.80, labour £65.  Total inc VAT £266.76  Am sure it would have been a good bit more from the main dealer.

Thanks for the info, David. Very useful for owners' future reference!

I've just been quoted 188 quid for the Tensioner belt kit + VAT + labour from my local Halfords Autocentre.

Seems like a decent enough price and I trust them rather more than my local Renault "specialist" – unless anyone can recommend a Vel expert in the Newcastle area?

A Gates auxiliary belt is only about £15. The other belt is power steering which is cheaper.

Only other bit needed is the wheel itself with the bearing.  I speak of the 3.5 here.

Be careful of garages that quote low or reasonable labour prices, but hike the parts up beyond 100% mark up.

Ask them if they are quoting for the power steering belt too.  They might not want to do that belt without some sucking through the teeth and another price hike.
